Census 2020 has started!

Hello Newton and Surrounding Areas!

The census has started and your response matters! The 2020 Census will determine congressional representation, federal funding, funding to our communities through libraries, schools, roads, public services, and provide data that will impact your communities for the next decade.

As rural areas we do not receive mail delivered to our homes, we have post office boxes. The mailings from the census are not mailed to post office boxes. Census workers were going to deliver those to us. With the outbreak of COVID-19 field operations have been suspended until April 1st as of now and could change depending on conditions. The mailing gives instructions on how to go online and complete the census. Everyone can go online and fill out the census without that mailing.

Please reach out by phone or video chat with family, neighbors and friends and encourage them to go online and fill out the census. If you have older family members that don't have a computer help them do that by video chat or other means and your device. We can all support and help each other. There is also a census phone number that they can call and do the census over the phone. 

Go to https://my2020census.gov/ to complete the census.

Here is a little tutorial for those that do not have the mailer. You can easily fill out the census by entering your address properly.

Summer Reading June 10 - July 30

Summer Reading has begun. Come to the library and check it out. Programs are available to Children, Teens, and Adults. Prizes and awards for everyone! We have two Story Times 7 yrs and under on Thursdays at 10:30 am, and 8 yrs and up on Tuesdays at 10.30 am. There is a Monthly Teen Activity on the 3rd Monday @ 4:00 in June and July.

Annual Luau Dinner by the Newton Town Library. Tickets are $10 Adults, and $5 Kids, can be purchased ahead of time at the Library or by phone 435-563-9283 during business hours (cash/check or card) or Newton Market (cash/check). Tickets can be purchased at the door that evening with cash or check. Held at the Newton Pavilion next to the library in the park, 85 S. Center, Newton.

Menu:
Roast Pig, Teriyaki Chicken, Rice & Beans or Coconut Rice, Macaroni Salad or Quinoa Salad, Watermelon, Hawaiian Rolls, Pineapple Upside Down Cake. Gluten Free and Vegetarian Options are part of the menu.
Activities that night include: Face painting, snow cones, and a hula hoop contest.

Puani Family will be performing from at 5:30 pm

This is a fundraiser dinner for the Library's Building Fund. We hope to expand the library in the future and the bid for this work came in at $80,000.

Child $5, Adult $10. Leis, Face painting, snow cones, and a hula hoop contest tickets $1 each.

January Book Club

Book Club this month is "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr. Books are available at the library for checkout. We meet on January 30 at 7 pm to discuss the book. Come join us!

Summer Reading Rocks Opening Party

Come have some fun at our summer reading kickoff open house party! Tuesday June 5th from 10:30 to 12:00. Come have fun at activity stations and enjoy a treat. Summer Reading is a fun way to enjoy reading.

Blind Date with a Book

Single? In a relationship? "It's complicated"? No matter! During the month of February come to the Newton Town Library and have a Blind Date with a Book! Check out one of our specially wrapped books and find something new. When you return your book (by February 28) make sure you fill out a "Rate your Date" slip and be entered in a drawing for a restaurant gift card. The fun begins today. We have books in a variety of topics.

The library is joining KUED's Annual Reading Marathon and it starts today. Come into the library to pick up a reading log or go to the website below to print one off yourself. The library will have a Super Reader Party in January to celebrate all those that turn a reading log into the library, this is the only way we know you completed it. You can also submit your minutes online to KUED and get an invite to their super reader party in Salt Lake City. http://www.kued.org/kids/super-reader-marathon-2017

We have had some great Super Reader Parties in the past with pizza and a movie. Join us and read everyday so you can come in January to our party.

Don't forget to join us for story times on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Teen activities will be twice a month from now on. Adults can participate in summer reading too and don't forget there are prizes at the end for everyone.

Recommended reading for June . It can be ordered on line for you kindle or other device through the Li bray. THE PRINCE OF PEACE by William Jennings Brian , is a great little book written by one of Americas great orators. This book is a lecture he gave as to the divinity of Christ. Starting in 1904 and given in many countries. The following is just a sample of the books contents.

Our food must we understand it before we eat it? If we refused to eat anything until we could understand the mystery of its growth, we would die of starvation. But this mystery does not bother us in the dining room.

One of his analogies concerning the Divinity of Christ is about a watermelon.”I was eating a piece of watermelon some months ago and was struck with its beauty. I took some seeds and dried them and weighed them and found that it would require some 5 thousand seeds to weigh a pound; and the I applied mathematics to that forty -pound melon. One of these seeds put into the ground, when warmed by sun and moistened by rain, it takes off its coat and goes to work: it gathers from some where two hundred thousand times it own weight and forcing this raw material through tiny stem, constructs a watermelon. It ornaments the outside with a covering of green : inside the green it put a layer of white, and within the core of red and through the red it scatters seed, each one capable of continuing the work of reproduction. BROKEN LANCE BY MICHELL SORENSEN

A great Pioneer Story by a gifted writer. The product of a genteel Victoria upbringing , refined Englishwoman Callie McCracken is an unlikely heroine of a story set in American West. But in the aftermath of an Indian raid on their wagon train , she is suddenly alone with her three young children in the wilds of Wyoming. This is a touching story of a woman who had to over come the most trying odds with faith and determination way beyond her upbringings. She survived unthinkable trials with a faith in God traveling alone in the wilderness on foot. The library has a copy of it call number CF Sorensen 19392. Unfortunately Michell died of cancer in 1995 so this is her last book.

    Greetings All Book Lovers, March 10, 2014

    As most of you know my father passed away on February 7th.  He's been bank rolling my non-profit book business since mom died.  I didn't know if we were going to be able to stay in business but my siblings all agree that moms vision of getting good books into children's hands at the lowest possible price was a tradition worth saving.  SO forward we go!

    For the older children ages 12 and up I have some new books.  The last one my dad reviewed before he died was BOMB by Steve Sheinkin.  It was a Newberry honor book last year but I hadn't read it.  My husband read it also and just LOVED it, so did dad.  It would appeal to older boys for sure.(5.00 13 up)  I also have Carl Hiaasens Chomp, Flush, and Hoot (Winner of the newberry medal).  All three are hilarious for boys or girls.(4.00 12 up)  Also another Newberry Honor Book from last year that I hadn't read until now is,"Three Times Lucky."  It has a few bad words in it but its a terrifically funny mystery that reads like velvet.  I do not sell books with bad language so I thought I'd give you a heads up if you want to read it first and blot out the few naughty words.  I got The Princess Academy and The Princess academy Palace of Stone back in.  I am so sorry we ran out last sale.  They are for girls ages 12 and up (4.00)  They are both the kind of books you can't put down!  On a fluke I found Avi's "Crispin The cross of the Lead".  Its more of a boys book but I sure didn't put it down when I read it! (12 up 2.50)  Also I found an oldie but goodie,"Out of the Dust " by Karen Hesse.  Its the winner of the Newberry Medal a number of years ago.  My mom MADE me read it and it still remains a favorite of mine today. (3.00 11 UP)  I have a huge selection of award winning novels for older children but only have five copies each of them so come early and partake!

    For ages 7-9 I have a new stock of Geronimo Stilton books.  They are fabulous and the children love the little pictures on each page.  They have really taken off in the United States.(7-9 4.00)  I have a new stock of The Hundred Dresses as we ran out last time.  It too won the Newberry medal and is by Eleanor Estes.  Its a book that just never goes out of style. (9 UP 4.00)  I got the Chocolate Touch back in!  It has been a favorite in our home with our boys.  Its by Patrick Skene Catling. (2.00 7-9)  I also have a new set of the Clemintime books for girls.  She is so hilarious!  Your daughters will love her.  On another note, the boys think she's pretty funny too.  We have a ton of the Magic Tree House books.  They remain the rock for readers 7-9.  There is something for everybody in this series and its very well written too!  Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen is back too.  This is a must read short little funny book.  My dad just sniffed at it when I asked him to review it but by the time he'd finished it he was converted! (3.00 9 UP)  I still have Gary Paulsens The Voyage of the Frog.  It has the word damn in the fist chapter and then it's clean for the rest of the book.  Its another exciting book for boys (9 UP 2.00)    I honestly believe that getting good readers between the ages of 7-9 is crucial.  This is the time when our children become readers!  Reading aloud never goes out of style.  My husband still reads me his favorite chapters of the books he reviews for me!  

    I haven't forgotten the picture books.  I am so excited about what I have found.  There's so many new and old titles and this note is already too long.  So sorry.  Come and browse through the wonderful picture books.  You will make new friends and find old friends lost!  Hope to see you here!
