Newton Town Library Job Description

Title: Library Assistant

Opened: July 13, 2018 Closed: July 27, 2018

Perform a variety of entry level, routine clerical duties as needed to expedite the delivery of public library services to make library materials readily available and easily accessible to the public. Functional assignments normally occur in supporting reference and circulation areas of the library.

Work independently under the supervision of the Library Director.

Work library shift independently performing daily duties such as opening and closing library and performing all duties of the library required for that day.  
Performs general and routine duties related to the sorting, shelving and re-shelving of library collection materials, including books, audio visual, etc.; performs shelf reading to monitor the accurate placement of materials; monitors collection for damage and needed repairs.

Performs routine circulation support duties; checks books and materials in and out, verifies proper barcodes, checks for damaged materials; retrieves book-drop materials; identifies patron status in relation to obligations, i.e., overdues, fines, and communicates the same to patrons. Assist the public with photocopying.

Perform routine look-up functions on the computer in assisting the patrons with computer aided resources. Provide general assistance to patrons by directing them to various locations in the library as needed to locate certain types of collection materials and books.

Keeps Director informed of shelving needs or problems. Perform general cleaning; pick up items left by patrons as needed to maintain basic tidiness of the library.
Perform related duties as required.

1: Education and Experience:
Sufficient education and training to demonstrate an aptitude or ability to perform the related duties.
No experience necessary, but helpful. Willing to receive and attend library training classes. 

2: Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Have some knowledge of library processes and procedures; interpersonal communication skills; and basic computer operations.
Ability to perform general clerical functions quickly and accurately; understand and follow written and oral instructions and work independently in carrying out work assignments; adhere to a prescribed routine; operate various office machines and equipment; establish and maintain effective working relationship with fellow employees and patrons of all ages; communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
3: Special Qualifications:
Workers must be at least 18 years of age and have a High School Diploma or GED.

4: Work Environment:
Incumbent of the position performs in a typical indoor setting with appropriate climate controls. Tasks require a variety of physical activities involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, and lifting. Talking, hearing and seeing necessary to the performance of most duties. Common eye, hand, finger, leg and foot dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions and discriminating thinking.

5: Hours:
Willing to work Mondays 3-7 pm, Tuesdays, or Thursdays 3-6 pm and some Saturdays, flexible on which day if needed.
Worker must be flexible and willing to cover for other workers.

Summer Reading Rocks Opening Party

Come have some fun at our summer reading kickoff open house party! Tuesday June 5th from 10:30 to 12:00. Come have fun at activity stations and enjoy a treat. Summer Reading is a fun way to enjoy reading. 

Newton Library Luau Fundraiser Dinner

Annual Luau Dinner by the Newton Town Library. Tickets are $10 Adults, and $5 Kids, can be purchased ahead of time at the Library or by phone 435-563-9283 during business hours (cash/check or card) or Newton Market (cash/check). Tickets can be purchased at the door that evening with cash or check. Held at the Newton Pavilion next to the library in the park, 85 S. Center, Newton.

Roast Pig, Teriyaki Chicken, Rice & Beans or Coconut Rice, Macaroni Salad or Quinoa Salad, Watermelon, Hawaiian Rolls, Pineapple Upside Down Cake. Gluten Free and Vegetarian Options are part of the menu.
Activities that night include: Face painting, snow cones, and a hula hoop contest.

Puani Family will be performing from at 5:30 pm

This is a fundraiser dinner for the Library's Building Fund. We hope to expand the library in the future and the bid for this work came in at $80,000.

Child $5, Adult $10. Leis, Face painting, snow cones, and a hula hoop contest tickets $1 each.
